      give them time to accustom themselves to the area/pen and then trickle them out of the pen a few at a time just a few each day when they are mostly hanging around the outside let them all go try to pick a quiet place with good cover on the edge of an open field

      They are around ten weeks old when put in the release pen and trickled out over a few weeks, if a pair of wild adults turn up around the pen when they are being released I let the lot out in one go as the adult birds will adopt them and will make a good job of looking after them

      so sorry Amelia iv only just seen your message hope all went ok you can buy the bits from Colins nets or agri game put them on at two weeks old if they are attacking one another you will need to take them off at six weeks old, if you have only a small number of birds you may not need them at all as they tend not to in small amounts

      the eggs during incubation I leave dry for best results then when the eggs start piping I try and get the humidity as high as possible you can even spray the eggs with a little warm water but its best not to open incubator if at all possible so close all vents until hatching over

    ive tried all sorts of traps. from normal snap traps to humane cages. this works everytime. ive found that the co2 lasts for around 24 kills. before replacement i found if you mount to a piece of wood. you can move it around the area. when placing on a board or piece of wood. dont put the trap no higher than 4 fingers width high. from bottom of board or piece of wood you are using. if you find the chocolate bait dosent work for. you use corn or seed in a little net bag instead

  • @Fototrotter
    @Fototrotter 6 років тому

    I've not used any of those traps, and only got to learn about them a few days ago... There's a video on YT about city rats and this device... This guy used bird seed and peanut butter in some fly screen to replace the lure bottle and had better success with it. What is it the rats are coming after? Your pheasant feed? Try mixing this with some peanut butter and replace the lure bottle. Don't compare 1trap with the results shown on wild secluded islands in NZ, those are set up, en masse and in a grid, on an island with no farming around and very little to no readily available foods present. To be really effective you'd probably also need to be setting up a denser grid of permanent A24's around the area you'd like to control. Since you're not on a secluded island, rats will keep invading from all sides 24/7. Have you tried setting up game cams to try and find the paths the rats are using to attack your pheasant cage?

    • @Fototrotter
      @Fototrotter 6 років тому

      Also placing the trap higher up and perfectly vertical, seemingly, prevents hedgehogs getting into the trap, as their ability to climb vertical surfaces is very limited, unlike rats and mice.

    • @johnygreenfeet
      @johnygreenfeet 6 років тому

      hi fototrotter your spot on the English countryside is so diverse and is home to many small creatures that have a right and place each lure will atract different things and same alike its so important to get the lure right my own view is that i will not be useing in the British countryside due to the complex wildlife and farming cultures that we have, cities and small islands yes also as you say shear number that would be needed to ring fence an area during my time using the trap I changed the feeder to stop the birds leaving a mess and excluding rats as to them eating crops I think it better to fill rat holes with bait and bury them so I have no need for the trap

    If you watch one of the manufacturers instructional videos it talks about using the pest indicators first to establish what pests are attracted to the bait so your not wasting your time killing rodents you don't want to kill.

    • @johnygreenfeet
      @johnygreenfeet 6 років тому

      hi nick The problem I have is after identifying the rodent I want to kill Its getting it to put its head in the kill trap and I have tried all manor of baits and it just dosent work I thought this would be the best thing since sliced bread I under Stand that they are very proud of it in New Zealand and im not trying to upset any one but when you have spent over £120 on some thing that has only killed one rat in a year and five other people have tried it and cant get it to work it is a little disappointing as you can see plenty have left demeaning comments as if they know better , If you look at the manufacture videos they are leaving them all over the countryside, In the uk it will soon be illegal to use poison and spring traps out side of a building yes out side of a building This has been identified as the only replacement in this country so far, the only way to kill a flipping rat or stoat is to throw the thing at one this trap is not an alternative to a spring trap or as yet to poison on open land im very sorry everyone but that is my findings so if you work for DEFRA take note

      I see plenty of videos in and around buildings where I can use what I want to kill rats but I don't want to because all food and harbourage for rats have been removed so I never have a problem in the first place can you find me a video of a 90 acre field of maize next to a pen of partridges with the trap working because that is were I want to kill the rats men and ladies in suits in the city have decided that it will and are going to ban spring traps and poison this is my point and my only point I can not get it to work what you don't know is that the baits being used is not available in uk as yet because hedge hogs and harvest mice will eat them If I wanted to spend the rest of my life in prison I would to but im am trying very hard to comply with the law

      Yes, I forgot how feudal England was, and still is, compared to other countries. For poaching the King's deer or other animals you would get your hands cut off, or worse, in the Middle Ages. And English peasants had to 'law' their dogs(extract the claws) to stop the dogs from coursing the King's deer. Very strict, and relatively still so! Good luck. kiwiwriting.tripod.com

    Easy ! for stoats, ferrets, weasels, and any members of the weasel family use a blood-based lure. For rats, use cinnamon, they cannot resist it. Professional rodent-trapper since 1970. kiwiwriting.tripod.com

    Can you only cut hawthorn like that or can you do it to any tree?

    • @johnygreenfeet
      @johnygreenfeet 6 років тому

      hi Andy you can cut any tree to make instant cover as long as some bark is still intact ,some may work best just bending them over and stacking some old wood on it if they are quite large they will most likely die, hazel ,blackthorn ,hawthorn , elder ,willow when small will work well it should only be cut like this when the sap isn't rising ie when there is no leaf, try to lay one over another year 1 will not be as good as year 3 by the time you get to year 5 start cutting again but it will work best if you do some each year. be mindful that the trees maybe of value to someone . letting in light from above will make a big difference to, hope this helps

      hi Cedric the greys go really wild when you introduce the ants I place the pots where ants are likely to be and leave them for a year , to start with you can just find some and dig them up if you can find the ant eggs they will really go for them or you can boil a hen egg and feed them the boiled yolk . crumb it in your hand and drop it amongst them

    Would it be that hard to make up your own lure ? I see there is a refill pouch you can buy to refill the lure bottle . These traps work well here in NZ , there have been lots on studies and comparisons with other traps . I used to trap possums for a living years ago using cyanide - pre baiting with flower and icing sugar .The cyanide came in many 'flavours' , didn't take me long to realise if I used the aniseed flavor I would always have problem with rats - the curry flavor very few problems . But as you stated our rats maybe different - hungrier or stupid perhaps. Good luck , I hope you find a solution .

    • @johnygreenfeet
      @johnygreenfeet 7 років тому

      Thank you for taking the time to comment I have the refill pouch and have banana aniseed lobster oil , I will try curry , I think it will need something special to trap truly wild rats out in the open in the uk and Europe, in the uk the season is short for sweet fruit and thus they will not be tempted by sweet treats this would probably be different in and around buildings where bait trapping is legal, you may well have a good point with hungrier . I believe the level of intelligence is key to rats success and it is very successful, one day we will find something that works well and it will be the making of the trap

    • @loooseunit
      @loooseunit 7 років тому

      I wouldn't use curry as a lure for rats , I was using it to discourage rats from eating my cyanide paste - the rats here didn't like the curry at all so would leave my baits alone for the possums to eat ,yes the rats could eat the cyanide get a 'hit' off it and then bugger off . In one area I would sometimes have the baits left by the rats but the possum bodies chewed on making them worthless - they were fetching a good price back then $50+ for a good pelt (in the '80s) out of a 100 baits you would expect 30+ possums .Another thing worth considering is the setting of the A24 to discourage mince getting up into the trap but making free access for the larger rat .

    • @IndigoJo
      @IndigoJo 6 років тому

      I think they were successful in NZ because they were used in remote areas where rats were the problem, not mice, and they were an introduced species (unlike in the UK) and a threat to native wildlife. In the UK, there is much greater biodiversity and mice and rats are both endemic, so any trap set up to kill rats will kill mice too if they're there.

    • @johnygreenfeet
      @johnygreenfeet 6 років тому

      thanks for the comment and I think you are spot on , DEFRA have just written a report on the trap being of limited use in the uk on stoats due to difference here a NZ I just hope the DOC trap gets a lot cheeper
